Understanding Body Trust and Diet Culture
February 28 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am PST
Join Jennifer Berry, MA, LPC-S, National Director of Family & Alumni Programs, for a webinar on “Understanding Body Trust and Diet Culture: Considerations for Working with Clients with Eating Disorders.” The webinar begins Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 9:00 AM PT/ 11:00 AM CT/ 12:00 PM ET. We are offering 1 CE hour through APA, CDR, and NBCC for live attendance.
Abstract:
The client with an eating disorder often feels imprisoned to the eating disorder and likely developed distrust of their body over time. In fact, this client often believes that body freedom is a display of the inability to control and perfect the body – a moral excuse of lacking will power. Body trust is often impacted by multiple historical influences with a foundational diet cultural bias. With this in mind, the client with an eating disorder often experiences intrusive, reoccurring thoughts and behaviors filtered through shame, distrust, self-loathing, and excessive fear.
When working with clients with eating disorders, clinicians can introduce the ideas of trust and freedom in body context. This will support their treatment and recovery as well as strengthen their overall self-concept and well-being.
Objectives:
– Understand the cultural influences that impact us and interfere with the therapeutic process
– Learn strategies to help clients tell their story and identify innate and historical factors that contribute to body shame
– Learn to help clients identify barriers that impact their ability to trust themselves and experience body freedom in their recovery
– Develop a compassionate focused lens that aligns with the client’s eating disorder symptomology
