The River Centre Foundation
The River Centre Foundation (RCF) is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization established in Ohio to advance education, prevention, research, and treatment of eating disorders. In the United States, it has been estimated that 30 million men and women will suffer from clinically significant eating disorders in their lifetime. The RCF was established to promote better understanding of the causes and the treatments of eating disorders and to prevent the potentially devastating effects of these illnesses through empirically based research, professional training, community education and advocacy.
Over the past three years, the major fundraising efforts for the RCF have been through a local walk aimed at bringing sufferers, family and friends together to provide support and raise awareness about eating disorders. These funds have been used to support public education, advocacy and research aimed at improving the resources available to those suffering from eating disorders.
This past year, we have made a major commitment to developing a pilot project called the “Healing Arts Project” designed to tackle body dissatisfaction, lack of positive self-expression low self-esteem which are factors linked to the development and maintenance of eating disorders. The aim has been to explore the power of artistic expression on a broad community level, not only to raise awareness of eating disorders but also to emphasize positive modes of self-expression through art emphasize the strength of human potential rather than simply focusing on illness.
In addition to opening up new avenues for fund-raising and community awareness, our focus is on positive self-expression, self-acceptance and body size acceptance among those vulnerable to disordered eating.
