ANAD – The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders
The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) is the original non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention and alleviation of eating disorders (since 1976). ANAD focuses on prevention, education and helping those who are struggling find treatment and support. ANAD has a helpline, school outreach programs, national awareness events, online discussion forums, prevention programs, and support groups across the nation.
ANAD’s helpline and support groups reach many across the nation who are struggling with eating disorders. The helpline, open Monday through Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm CST, is distinguished by compassionate listening and referral to eating disorder clinicians, inpatient eating disorder centers and outpatient clinics, support group and other support resources. ANAD support groups are a free, self-help resource that acts as an adjunct to treatment. Many find a community of support in their ANAD group, which contributes significantly to their recovery.
ANAD’s school programs are among its most effective outreach. The ANAD School Guidelines packet was created by a clinical team for school teachers and administrators to identify students with eating disorders, refer them to professionals, and to equip the whole school to be aware of this issue. ANAD staff addresses students in Chicago area schools each week during the school year, providing valuable information and a recovered speaker who shares his or her story of recovery.
Prevention is at the forefront of ANAD’s mission. ANAD website, www.anad.org, is a steady source of eating disorders news and information for public awareness and education. It also supplies referral lists and an online discussion forum, hosts the Student Bodies© prevention program, and reports legislative advocacy updates.
